The Lüderitz Blue School is registered with the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture of the Republic of Namibia, registered 7720. Admission is open to all learners, irrespective of race, colour, ethnic origin or creed. We take safeguarding very seriously and all staff will be subject to vigourous checks.

Oceans Day /Strandcubs

Coordinated by The Lüderitz Blue School, the Lüderitz Strandcubs are a group of boys and girls from all schools in Lüderitz who are passionate about exploring, learning about and caring for our unique and beautiful ocean environment.

Fridays mean one thing for the Lüderitz Strandcubs - Oceans Day! From beach clean- ups to raft-building, ocean art to species-counting, the Strandcubs are committed to becoming experts about our wonderful ocean surroundings- while also having a lot of fun!

The Luderitz Strandcubs returned to the peninsula under the expert guidance of Olga Rossler to see how the desert landscape has come to life after the recent rains. Some of the plants we saw in February are no longer recognisable with their new leaves and flowers and some are so rare they are only visible after a good rain. We even got to choose a common name for one - the Namib Bubble Plant.

The Strandcubs / Oceans Day kids visited the Kelp Blue site at Shearwater Bay where the first cultivated giant kelp (macrocystis pyrifera) in Namibia is now flourishing and visible at surface. They also saw the penguins at Halifax island and learnt about the dangers of overfishing and the importance of maintaining harmony in the ocean ecosystem.

The Strandcubs were taken on a tour of the Namibian Ports Authority in Lüderitz - Namport - where they learned about how the port functions, how Lüderitz Port Control keep operations running smoothly and even saw the resident seal.

The Strandcubs had a split session with photographer and videographer Arthur Likando. First to learn some of the theory of photography and how to achieve the right exposure through adjusting shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Then they had the chance to put it into practice in the magical Van Gysen garden in Lüderitz.

The Strandcubs visited the Lüderitz SPCA. They learnt about how to identify and care for the animals, did a lot of cuddling and even got to name some of the puppies. The more rescue animals are exposed to people, the more likely they are to be adopted. I'm sure the StrandCubs will be back for lots more cuddling.

Dr Suzana Malunga came to teach the children some basic first aid techniques and lots of tips about healthy eating and the importance of an active lifestyle.
